Cricket was introduced to the Indian subcontinent by the British in the 18th century and the first cricket club was established in 1792. The Indian men’s national cricket team played their first international match on 25 June 1932 in the Lord’s Test against England.
The sixth team to achieve Test cricket status, India went on to win 199 for almost 20 years in their first 50 years of international cricket, with only 35 wins in the 1996 Test. Strengthened with the emergence of players like Kapil Dev, India excelled in men’s limited-overs cricket and played the DYTP against England in 1974 and the T20I against South Africa in 2006.
